Cape Town to Nairobi Day 27 Chitimba Beach, Lake Malawi

A boring day of driving, but at least the scenery is beautiful. We drove 6 hours through the Malawian mountains as we drove from the south end of the lake to the north.

I was told the average life expectancy here is 30 -35 due to the high rate of AIDS and HIV being passed down to children. Some days it’s really sad seeing the amount of poverty and seeing the children begging. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa.

As we drive, I see small children walking along the roads some look as young as 3 or 4, walking alone, and as we pass by they all yell and wave at the truck.

There is a group of cyclists sharing this camp with us and they are biking from Cairo to Cape Town. One of them told me that they have been pelted with stones as they pass by the children in some of the countries. I’m not sure why the children do this.

Regardless, the country is beautiful and all of the people I have met here have been very nice to me.
