Cape Town to Nairobi Day 31 Stone Town, Zanzibar

We crossed from Dar to the island of Zanzibar via 2 ferries which took us over 4 hours. The ferries were so crowded I ended up sitting in a cargo compartment for over an hour. I’m sure there is a capacity limit and I’m also quite sure we had exceeded it!

Stone Town is a series of very narrow streets lined with small shops smaller than my bedroom at home where you could buy carvings, paintings, shoes, sunglasses, t-shirts, and basically anything else you might want.

After a couple of hours on our own to wander the streets and buy things we didn’t need we met at a very nice bar for drinks while watching the sun set over the ocean. After sunset we moved a few blocks away to a food market for supper. There were about 50 vendors selling all sorts of meats and seafoods on a stick, pizzas (nothing like pizza at home, more like an omlette), and fresh sugar cane juice. The sugar cane was manually put through a squeeze multiple times to squish out the super tasty juice.

After supper we went to a big party in an old fort in the city. The music was good, the drinks were great and we had a really good time…..until one of the girls purses and camera was stolen right off the table and a hatred for Americans started to come out and most the Canadians were accused of being American and the mood got tense.

While I was at the food market a guy told me he didn’t like me because I was American. I explained that I was Canadian and he called me a liar. I showed him my passport and he said I didn’t have a Canadian accent, so I asked what Canadians sounded like. He said we all have French accents! LOL! I assured him otherwise and he talked to a couple other Canadians in the group as well that confirmed that we do not all have French accents! LOL
